6-8 PE, Athletics, and Teams
Gateway’s physical education program is designed to provide activity and physical fitness while teaching hand-eye coordination, sportsmanship, team play, inclusiveness, and having fun through physical activity. The program stresses physical fitness health, and students participate in the President’s Physical Fitness Test. Gateway’s PE program features many creative games and activities, as well as traditional sports: flag football, softball, basketball, hockey, ultimate Frisbee, archery, volleyball, tennis, and soccer.
PE Electives
In sixth to eighth grades, the PE program is supplemented by PE electives courses. Elective PE classes introduce “life sports” that can prepare students for healthy activities beyond the school years. Gateway middle school students are required to choose at least two PE electives classes out of the eight electives each school year, and they choose from a range of offerings such as bicycling, beach volleyball, jazz dance, and rock climbing. Some electives classes include transportation to off-campus locations for instruction.
Athletics and Teams
Students in fifth through eighth grade may also play on after school sports teams that compete against other area schools. Gateway sports include flag football, basketball, and volleyball, and the teams are divided into 5-6 grade teams and 7-8 grade teams.
