Student Government
Gateway’s classrooms are structured to allow students to take charge of their learning and to influence their school environment. Through class meetings and student council, students are involved in making important choices about their individual classroom and their school community.
Starting in third grade, class representatives attend monthly student council meetings and report back about school-wide events and issues. Starting in middle school, the students hold elections to fill student council leadership positions. The elected student officers learn organization and communication skills while having an impact on their school experience. Student leaders prepare agendas, run meetings, and give input to the Head of School. They plan and implement spirit days and student contests, as well as larger events such as the talent show and the middle school dance. The confidence and independence gained through student council experience help middle school students in their transition to high school.
