First Year Teaching at Gateway 2006

Experience Haley has taught in a variety of classroom settings including a public school Kindergarten, a 3-4 combo class at a charter school and a 5-6 bilingual class at a year-round school. During her master's coursework, Haley taught 2nd grade at an independent K-12 school in Montecito. The following year she was hired as the lead 2nd grade teacher and taught there for four years. Haley's love of family and the beautiful Santa Cruz area brought her back home in 2006, where she became a first grade teacher at Gateway.

"Part of my vision is to grow with each and every child as they have the opportunity to learn the skills they need for a successful life," Haley says. "Parents play an invaluable role in this process. I invite parent participation in the daily functioning of the class as well as in special activities. Another part of my vision is that your child feel empowered and capable as a learner. The class creates a safe, respectful and loving environment in which the children will see the inevitable mistakes that come in learning as opportunities, not threats. First grade is a time for children to develop life skills in conjunction with academics. Children at this age can be involved in making independent decisions, taking initiative and becoming self-directed. These are age-appropriate steps in the continual development toward your child becoming a self-sufficient, mature and caring individual!"
