K-5 Technology
Gateway School integrates beginning computer skills into young children's regular classes and makes elective instruction available as well. Experienced teachers guide students through basic skills like keyboarding and graphics manipulation which will serve them well as their technical needs expand. Gateway also offers after-school and summer classes in Lego Robotics and other fun technical subjects.
Children in the 4th and 5th grades in particular have many opportunities to learn and use more complicated computer skills such as videography, graphics, and word processing in their schoolwork. Programs used in these grades include Powerpoint, Excel, Photoshop and Microsoft Word, all of which the students use as a means of expression.
At Gateway, computer skills do not replace traditional forms of knowledge, but rather augment and enhance them with an integrated, developmentally appropriate approach. Students are always carefully supervised and given guidance through a planned program. The net result is that Gateway students have a head start on the skills they will need in their education and as adults.
