May 20

Dear Families,

We had a fun day in the garden on Friday celebrating the Salad Feast.  The students grew delicious ingredients and everyone had a good time!

The Local Business Reports are here now, and on display.  Students are proud of their hard work, and they deserve to be!  These reports are wonderful! Along with the Biography Reports and Poetry Books, the Local Business Reports represent the culmination of a year of study and writing.  We are looking forward to celebrating these amazing writers at our Author’s Party.  Please join us on May 30th at 11:00 to hear our authors read their work.

Speaking of authors, we are fortunate to have talented author David Zeltser in our third grade community.  David will be sharing his new book, The Night Library, with the third graders tomorrow at 8:45. Thank you, David.  We are looking forward to it!

Our final field trip of the year will be this Thursday, May 23rd. We will be walking to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf.  We will leave school at 10:15 and return by 1:30.  We will be eating our snack and lunch on the wharf, so please pack food that your child can eat “in the field”.  Please also remind your student to dress in layers and to wear sunscreen.  Water bottles and hats are advisable.  Students will be carrying their own food and water, so please help them to do so in a manageable way, for example, with a light backpack. We will also be enjoying an Italian Gelato treat at Riva House.  Please discuss a different treat, if your child cannot eat gelato.  There is a non-dairy option called sorbetto.  We will meet one of the directors of the maintenance crew on the wharf, walk to the end to see the sea lions (hopefully), eat lunch and our treat and head back to school.  Thank you to those who are joining us for our fun trip!  We will not be back in time for the school lunch, so please pack a lunch for your child.  Thank you!

It’s a busy time! There are other school-wide events happening too, such as Work Days as we prepare for our move.  Check the Gateway website for details.

We have been having some wonderful days here in class.  This group is enjoying being together, as we share business reports, illustrate poetry books, work on geometry in math, and just generally play, read, think and share together.  With all that swirls around us in May and June, it’s important to take mindful moments.  It’s exciting to think about the move, summer, a new grade and all the many changes.  We will be checking in about our feelings in the days ahead.

Please join us if you can, on June 6th at 9:00 am for our Gateway Step-Up Day Celebration.  You are also invited to our 8th grade graduation from 1:00 to 2:45 that day, our last day of school.

Have a good day,

Julie
