Dear Middle School Families,
We ended our three-day CAIS visitation today. The accreditation processes is always so valuable for schools as a whole and for the individual members of the community. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of all of the members of the Gateway community: kids, parents, faculty, staff, administration, and of course, our board. We also recognize the incredible time and effort given by the visiting team. We look forward to using all that we have learned through this process to make Gateway an even stronger school than it is now.
Sincerely, LeighAnn and The Middle School Team

Dear Middle School Families,
We started our day this morning with heavy hearts about the events of last evening. We all are impacted when tragic events happen in our community, and we know that some are more directly affected than others. This morning, many teachers, either in class or in advisory, checked in with the students about the events and their feelings and experiences yesterday. Our kids experienced everything from being part of a lock down to being unaware what had transpired. Some teachers also discussed how we communicate this on a K-8 campus and how to be mindful about how discussing these kinds of events can affect the younger students. We tried to re-instill a sense of safety here in our Gateway community while also recognizing the tragedies that we have had lately in the greater community. Kids are resilient, but it was a scary time for many of them and for us. We all wish you a healthy and peaceful week ahead.
Sincerely, LeighAnn and The Middle School Team

Dear Middle School Families,
The Middle School Teachers are very excited for our afternoon professional development session with Dr. Zhao tomorrow at Mt. Madonna School to be followed by his presentation at the Cabrillo Crocker Theatre at 7pm. I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Zhao speak at the Brain Conference last year, and he was inspiring and insightful. He was the only Keynote Speaker to receive a standing ovation during the conference. We hope to see you all tomorrow night for this very special opportunity.
This year’s Learning and the Brain Conference was held last week in San Francisco and two of our Middle School colleagues, Kirsten and Sara, attended. They both returned excited to share with us all that they learned.
Please see below for news from the Middle School and a list of upcoming events.
Sincerely, LeighAnn and The Middle School Team

Algebra 1a Eighth Grade Families,
January is bringing some chilly mornings. I appreciate how everyone is showing up for first period math class on time. The students are welcome to bring a cup of hot chocolate to class if they need it to help them wake up.
This is a wonderful time of year to cuddle up in a blanket with their Algebra book. Especially since the semester one final is coming up. The Algebra1a final will be on January 23rd and 24th. This will cover material from the whole semester. Students should begin to study for it now. The following is a recommendation on how to study for a cumulative math test.
How to Study for a Cumulative Math Exam
Study one Chapter at a time: Book, Notebook, Quizzes then Test
Study the Book:
Study each chapter covered, starting with chapter one.
- Read the Lesson title and the Goals or What You’ll Learn topics at the start of each lesson. Ask yourself, “ Do I know how to …..?” Think of what you know about the topics before you glance through the lesson.
- Read the vocabulary list at the beginning of the lesson. Quiz yourself on what the words mean and what they have to do with this lesson.
- Study all highlighted words, study tip notes, and key concepts.
- Try the examples. Then try some of the problems. You may want to get problems from the extra practice section at the end of the book.
- Do the Study Guide and Practice problems (check the odd answers), if you got work wrong go back to that lesson and review the material. Try two more problems for every one you got wrong.
Study your Notes:
Go through your notebooks and read all your notes.
Study your Quizzes and Tests:
- Try the problems on your old quizzes again. Pay particular attention to the ones you got wrong.
- Re-do all problems you got wrong on your old tests.
- Try at least one of each kind of different problem on the test even if you didn’t get it wrong. If you get it wrong now do two problems for every one you miss.
Added Tips in Studying for Exams
- Plan Ahead- Make a Study Schedule to spread out the studying
- Get extra help on what you don’t understand
- Arrive at the exam well rested, well fed, and with all your materials
Take care, study hard, and stay warm,
Maryd
