AcroYoga ®

Join Certified AcroYoga® instructor Amy Impellizzeri for this introduction to AcroYoga®. Blending the spiritual wisdom of yoga and the dynamic power of acrobatics, this practice cultivates trust, connection and playfulness. Children will work on strength and flexibility through assisted inversions as well as partner and group activities such as clapping high five push-ups and mini pyramids. Classes will be held outside, weather permitting.

Acting on Camera

Lights! Camera! Action! Join professional actor Ralph Peduto for this acting workshop intended to give the student actual on-camera experience and widen the student's appreciation and understanding of film, TV and other media. Students will learn skills and techniques of on-camera acting, camera awareness, auditioning, performing, script analysis, and more.

Animal Lovers

The perfect camp for your budding veterinarian! A combination of field trips, walking explorations and classroom visits from animal experts bring students up close and personal with a variety of feathered, scaly and furry friends. Transportation will be provided as needed from the Gateway campus.

Cartooning and Characters

Learn to draw the characters from your favorite animated series or comic book! Local artist and educator Collette Sanchez begins by teaching students the basics of figure drawing and cartooning before helping students explore the fictional universes they love and to create their own characters and stories.

Chess: Beginning

Play chess and explore creative games and activities in this fun class! National Master and professional chess instructor Gjon Feinstein will spend the first half of each class teaching beginners the rules and objectives of chess. Basic guidelines to opening, middlegame and endgame play will be covered as well. After an outdoor break, students spend the second half of the class engaged in chess-related group games and creative projects.

Chess: Advanced

Improve your game and have fun in this in depth chess class! Students in this intermediate/advanced class will start their days in chess-related group games and creative projects. After an outdoor break, students spend the second half of class learning from National Master and professional chess instructor Gjon Feinstein. Gjon will review fundamental tactics, endgame mates, and various middlegame strategies. Students will learn to record and review their games and to use a chess clock.

Clay Workshop

Cindy Haug, expert potter, artist and former Gateway School teacher, returns to teach this exciting, two-week clay workshop. The class will focus on three ways of using clay; coils, slab projects, and animal sculptures. Students work will be glazed and fired before being sent home with them. This class runs for two weeks to allow ample time to finish projects.

Computer Animation Using Flash Macromedia

Bring your ideas to life on the screen! Gateway’s own technology teacher Cindy Zimmerman teaches this unique workshop. Students will be introduced to computer animation using Macomedia Flash®. Kids will have fun making and assembling a basic animated cartoon using movie symbols, sound and animated text. The projects will be emailed or burned onto CD and then mailed home.

Creative Critters

Artist and educator Collette Sanchez leads this arts and crafts exploration of the animal kingdom. All skill levels are welcome! Drawing from their imaginations, photographs and live animals, students will learn about the anatomy and diversity of animals while establishing skills in field-sketching and painting. Students will also create a variety of animal toys and figures while developing their own imaginary species.

Creatures, Aliens and Slime

This class is not for the squeamish or faint of heart! Professional puppeteer and costume designer Camilla Henneman leads this two-week intensive workshop. Using her experience gained working on the sets of major motion pictures, Camilla will teach students how to make slime, blood and other disgusting substances. Longer term projects may include zombie make up and the construction of monster masks.

Culinary Camp

Let’s get cooking! Join professional chef and instructor Phyllis Endicott on the Gateway Campus to create gourmet food and learn basic culinary skills. Chef Endicott has a background in science and each day will include an exciting experiment that pertains to the cooking process. Using fresh, quality ingredients students will craft and sample creative cuisine and bring home delicious recipes.

Extreme Tidepooling

This year Blue Water Ventures offers a new, three-day class, ideal for both graduates of Marine Science and Kayaking and slightly older beginners. This class will use kayaks, snorkel masks, wetsuits and a sense of adventure to get up close and personal with our amazing coastline. Destinations may include: Elkhorn Slough, Santa Cruz kelp beds and the wild shoreline of Davenport. Release forms and schedule with specific times and destinations will be sent prior to the class. We would appreciate volunteer drivers for this class. Contact summer program to make arrangements: summer@gatewaysc.org.

Fabric Art

Join Gateway staff for this perennial favorite. Students will paint, dye, and decorate a variety of fabric pieces. Project may include wall hangings, lanterns and lampshades, fans, scarves and tee-shirts. Students can also bring items from home to decorate.

Family Farm

Experience life on a real working family farm! Students spend the full day at the picturesque Everett Family Farm in Soquel. Mornings will be spent learning about running a farm, caring for chickens and goats, collecting and boxing eggs, or helping with the berry harvest. Afternoons are spent exploring the creek, looking for wildlife, playing games and going on hayrides. Transportation will be provided to and from the Gateway campus. Students bring their own lunches, and a healthy and often farm fresh snack is provided.

Guitar I and II

Fun for your summer strummer! Learn guitar basics from professional guitar instructor Marc Sveen and immerse yourself in a world of music. This class will cover beginning techniques as a group, and will include entertaining musical activities and experience with different types of music. Students should bring their own guitars or arrange for a rental. No previous guitar experience is required to sign up for Guitar I. Guitar I and II can be taken in succession, while more experienced guitarists can sign up for Guitar II with Gateway staff approval.

Hip Hop Dance

Join Gateway staff member and dance instructor, Ashley Collins in this high energy dance class. Complete with fun warm-ups and inspiring music, children will learn exciting dance moves and choreograph their own routines. Family and friends are invited to attend a dance recital that will be given at the end of the week.

Jewelry-Making

Make your summer sparkle! Local artist and designer Tauna Coulson returns to help students create a variety of truly unique jewelry pieces. Tauna teaches students to blend everyday objects and ingenuity to create projects that students will love and finished pieces that everyone will admire.

Jr. Lego®

Lets LEGO®! Join Gateway School technology teacher Cindy Zimmerman for this exciting introduction to LEGO® engineering. Using special LEGO® kits and easy-to-follow instructions, children will get hands-on experience working with gears, pulleys, and electrical motors. Projects may include: an amusement park ride, crane, miniature table saw, washing machine and a variety of cars. Kits will be dissembled and returned to the instructor at the end of class.

Kindergarten Camp

Have fun getting ready for kindergarten! This two-week day camp, taught by Sarojani Rohan, is specifically designed for children entering kindergarten this fall. Children will take part in age-appropriate camp activities within a small group. This is a great introduction to the larger environment of elementary school on the Gateway School campus, and an excellent idea for any child entering kindergarten in the fall. Space is limited and priority enrollment is given to children entering Gateway’s kindergarten program. To register for this class, contact the Summer Course Coordinator at (831) 423-0341 x 334. We have groups of kindergarten children enrolled in our day camp all summer long and you are welcome to combine the two programs!

Landscapes and Figures

Isabell Fearnsby leads this art class focused on building figure drawing and landscape painting skills. Each day the class will explore new mediums and techniques while they examine the forms of humans, animals and the landscape of the Central Coast. Walking trips to nearby fields and beaches will serve as opportunities to practice what is being learned in the classroom amid inspiring settings.

Lego® Architecture

Design and build the ideal fantasy home and garden with Lego®. Budding architects will explore and create miniature rooms complete with intricate windows and archways. Students can add imaginative details such as horse stables, dog houses and even tiny amusement rides. Kits will be dissembled and returned to the instructor at the end of class.

Lego® Movie Maker®

Join Cindy Zimmerman for this introduction to stop-motion video. Students will build their own mini Lego® movie sets and select their characters. Using web cameras and Microsoft Movie Maker® software they will create an original animated movies using stop motion and live video techniques. Students will learn how to add exciting sound effects, music and narration. Finished projects will be burned to CD so they can go home with students.

Lego® Robotics NXT

The latest generation of Lego® Mindstorms has arrived! Now you can create the smartest, strongest and most advanced Lego® robot ever! Beginners and experts alike can create vehicles, machinery, and animal robots that obey every command. Incredible new hi-tech sensors combine with the power of the NXT Intelligent Brick to open up new robotic possibilities. Students will learn to use sound sensors, touch sensors, and light sensors. All programming is icon-based drag and drop. This is a great way to learn about mechanics, physics and computer programming. All necessary equipment is provided. Robots will be disassembled and returned to the instructor at end of the class.

Lego Robotics RCX

Learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork using the Lego Mindstorms RCX Robotics System. Gateway School technology teacher Cindy Zimmerman will teach students how to build individual robots from Lego’s following easy, step-by-step instructions, and then to program them to solve various challenges such as: following a line, picking up objects, throwing balls, sumo wrestling, and tug-of-war. The robots are programmed using Lego’s RCX Code, an easy-to-understand visual programming environment.

Mask Making

Marine Science/Kayaking

Enjoy the wonders of our amazing coast! Sign up to take advantage of the incredible marine resources in our community. We’ll explore tide pools, visit beaches, view seals at Ano Nuevo, and learn kayaking skills at Elkhorn Slough. Release forms and schedule with specific times and destinations will be sent prior to the class.

On Tuesday and Thursday, children should be dropped off and picked up at the listed locations. Children who are attending Gateway’s day camp will be transported by a staff member on those two days. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will begin and end the day at Gateway School. We will need volunteer drivers Wednesday and Friday.

Selecting the Extended Care option will allow your child to be on campus for any period this class does not cover between 9am-4pm.

Out & About

Explore your local community and beyond! Gateway School’s own Sari Mundon will lead this all day class to a new destination each day. Destinations will include: trips to local points of interest, a cookout in the woods, and even a long distance trip to a museum or amusement park. The class will travel on foot, by public transportation and in Gateway School vans. A schedule with specific times and destinations will be sent prior to the class. Price includes all transportation and entry fees.

Outdoor Art

Long time Gateway teacher and local artist Dave Gardner leads a class of outdoor artistic exploration. Students will paint, draw, sculpt, build, dig, plant and improvise art on the Gateway Campus and in the beautiful surrounding areas. From recycled wood painting to sidewalk murals to grand sand castles and beyond, this class will emphasize and celebrate humor and imagination. Staff will document the class’s cooperative artistic endeavors for a digital portfolio to be emailed home.

Poetry and Songs

Perfect for the aspiring poet or songwriter! Join Gateway School third grade teacher Julie Foster for this class of singing, writing and reading poetry and lyrics. Students will study the poetry and songs of Shel Silverstein, Kate Wolfe and other poets/lyricists of interest. Classroom time will be coupled with journeys into nearby Lighthouse Field and to the ocean for inspiration in writing poetry. Painting and drawing will be added to students’ poems to create a special piece that will be taken home at the end of class.

Puppetry

Professional puppeteer Camilla Henneman brings years of puppetry experience to Gateway Summer Program. This class begins with a lesson in puppet history (taught by puppets of course!). Students will design and build their own puppets and then use them to investigate a variety of performance techniques and practices.

Puppets, Masks and Performance

Join professional puppeteer and costume designer Camilla Henneman for this two-week intensive workshop. Camilla combines her years of expertise gained on the sets of major motion pictures with her experience as a school teacher to lead this workshop. Students will spend the first week creating masks, puppets and characters. The second week will be spent producing a performance that family and friends can enjoy on the last day of class.

Ranchbuilders

Experience life on a working ranch! Children work on real-life projects at Jade Ranch, located on 75 acres adjacent to Wilder Ranch, north of Santa Cruz. As a team, the children build fences and stalls, learn to use an array of tools, feed animals and pick produce from summer gardens. This week-long outdoor experience gives children the chance to experience ranch life overlooking the Monterey Bay. Transportation is provided to and from the Gateway School campus.

Science Hiking

Science Magic

Is it magic or is it science? Have fun with physics and amaze your family and friends when you put on your own science magic show! Make raisins dance, plastic bags pop, water move at angles and against gravity, marvel at muscle resistance, play tricks on your eyes and make light bend and bounce. Your magical guide is Gateway School Life Lab Science teacher Caprice Potter.

Sewing

Stitch this class into your schedule of summer fun! Students of all skill levels are welcome to join in this class taught by Jean Gillespie. Students will choose from a variety of possible projects including: flannel pajamas, drawstring backpacks, pillowcases, aprons and more. A list of supplies will be sent home prior to the class for those who want to pick their own fabric.

Spanish Language Camp

¡Bienvenidos! Have fun learning Spanish this summer! Children will experience the Spanish language through oral exercises and activities revolving around the rich culture and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries. Students will play games, tell stories, and cook yummy Spanish treats. Designed for younger students who are new to Spanish as well as those who might need a refresher. This class runs for two weeks, and the price is for both weeks combined.

Take Stage

Let your stories take the stage in this drama workshop taught by professionals from WEST Performing Arts. This year’s class is open to a wide range of ages and will draw on the skills of each age group to create a play that all will enjoy. After some dramatic warm-up exercises, students decide on a theme and help create a script that emphasizes imagination and active participation by all. Younger students will learn the basics of stage direction, costuming and stage presence, while older students will play an integral role in creating, writing and staging. Parents are invited to their child’s performance at week’s end. Transportation will be provided to and from the Gateway School campus.

Trinkets and Treasures

Isabell Fearnsby leads this class that combines imagination and art into a week of excitement for younger students. The class will work with a variety of new and recycled materials and embellishments to create jewelry boxes and treasure chests as well as enough jewelry, toys and miniature art pieces to fill them.

Writing Intensive

Students who take this four-week course will learn to use a variety of skills and strategies that will help them become more organized, fluent writers. We will focus on the phases of the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising and publishing) in addition to learning how to use structured writing templates and Inspiration® software to organize ideas and write in a more efficient manner. Fith graders will focus on writing different types of solid well-constructed paragraphs as well as continuing to develop good keyboarding skills. Sixth and Seventh graders will focus on essay writing. Each student’s portfolio will contain finished work as well as tools and strategies for writing projects during the upcoming school year.

Michael Ann Jacobson Snyder, M.A. was trained in the Barton Reading and Spelling System. She has worked as an Educational Therapist since 1999 and has also taught full-time. Sign up for the Writing Intensive at the top of the registration worksheet.
