Kindergarten Camp: $325


June 23-July 3 (Weeks 1-2)

Have fun getting ready for kindergarten! This two-week day camp is specifically designed for children entering kindergarten in the fall. Children will take part in age-appropriate camp activities within a small group. Priority enrollment will be given to children entering Gateway’s kindergarten. We will also have groups of kindergarten children enrolled in our day camp all summer long, and you are welcome to combine the two programs! Taught by Sarojani Rohan.

Fabric Painting and Arts: $190

THIS WEEK IS FULL

The world is your canvas! Students will create beautiful works of art on fabric, as well as wearable art. We’ll paint, dye, and decorate a variety of fabric pieces. Projects may include a batik walling hanging, a hanging canvas collage, a tie-dye tee-shirt, a felted hat, and a beautiful, accordion-style fan created with lace, ribbons and dried flowers. Taught by Jeannie Wholey.

Let’s Lego! Using special Lego kits, children will create machines from easy-to-follow instructions. Each machine will run on a 4-volt electric motor. Build an amusement park, washing machine, windmill, conveyor belt, crane, and race car! The first half of the class will focus on junior engineering instruction and building. The second half will offer time for creative free building. Taught by Gateway's technology teacher, Cindy Zimmerman.

Mask-Making Workshop: $190

Create your own sculpted masks! Students will be introduced to masks from around the world, learn how to build the basic structure using paper mache, then paint and decorate their one-of-a-kind creation. Students in Week 1 can also enroll in the afternoon drama class called “Take the Stage” for a thematic pairing all about masks. Students in both sessions will have a chance to complete several projects, and to explore their creative vision with music and movement. Taught by artist and local art instructor, Juel Hartmann.

Take the Stage with WEST: $210

Lights, set, sound! Let your stories take the stage in this drama workshop with West End Theater. Students will work on a drama showcase, which ties in thematically with our morning Mask-Making class (fun with both, but not required to enroll in this class). Join us for your child’s performance at 3:30 on Friday the 27th at the Santa Cruz Art League at Braodway and Ocean Streets. Transportation will be provided to and from the Gateway campus. Taught by experienced drama instructors from West End Theater.

Lego Mindstorms Robotics: $210 ($170 for Week 2)

Learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork using the Lego Mindstorms RCX Robotics System. Students build individual robots from Legos following easy, step-by-step instructions, and then program them to solve various challenges such as following a line, picking up objects, throwing balls and tug-of-war. The robots are programmed using Lego’s RCX Code, an easy-to-understand visual programming environment. The commands are downloaded into the robot via an infrared transmitter. Let the games begin! Taught by Gateway's technology teacher, Cindy Zimmerman.

Take the Stage with WEST: $210

Make it, wear it, share it! Students will create a variety of unique jewelry pieces by making their own beads and embellishments. Using air-dry clay, fabric, yarns, felt, wire buttons and other fun materials, we will make all the components to assemble a finished piece of jewelry. Taught by Jeannie Wholey.

Ranchbuilders: $290

Experience life on a working ranch overlooking Monterey Bay! Children work together on real-life projects at Jade Ranch, located on 75 acres adjacent to Wilder Ranch, north of Santa Cruz. As a team, the children build fences and stalls, learn to use an array of tools, feed animals, and pick produce from summer gardens. Transportation is provided to and from the Gateway campus. Taught by Russell and Erica Berg.

Language Arts Intensive $450

June 23 – July 18 (Weeks 1-4) (No class on Friday, July 4th.)
1st & 2nd Graders: 8:45 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
3rd & 4th Graders: 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Boost your child’s foundational reading and writing skills. This four-week class is taught by Marlene Revay, Educational Specialist trained in the LiPS Program, a multi-sensory approach to reading instruction, and by Joan Saia, Gateway’s Educational Specialist. They will use multi-sensory instructive techniques to teach skills in reading, spelling, and handwriting fluency. To meet individual needs, there will be a 4 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. Registration for this class is open to Gateway students only, from now until May 1; if your child is not enrolled at Gateway and you are interested in this class, please email summer@gatewaysc.org to be added to the waitlist. Open registration for all students will start on May 1, and the waitlist students will be contacted at that time.

2D and 3D Art Camp [A, B, C]: $190

Explore and create in two and three dimensions! Students will enjoy a range of art instruction and materials. Projects may include watercolor paints and pencils, wire sculpture, collage, beading, pastels, paper mache, origami, and found object sculpture. Students will explore representational as well as abstract forms. Students will also experience working outdoors directly from nature. Projects and techniques will differ between A, B and C sections, allowing students to take the course multiple times. Taught by artist and local art teacher, Juel Hartmann.
