Junior Engineering with Legos: $210 ($170 for Week 2)

Let’s Lego! Using special Lego kits, children will create machines from easy-to-follow instructions. Each machine will run on a 4-volt electric motor. Build an amusement park, washing machine, windmill, conveyor belt, crane, and race car! The first half of the class will focus on junior engineering instruction and building. The second half will offer time for creative free building. Taught by Gateway's technology teacher, Cindy Zimmerman.

Mask-Making Workshop: $190

Create your own sculpted masks! Students will be introduced to masks from around the world, learn how to build the basic structure using paper mache, then paint and decorate their one-of-a-kind creation. Students in Week 1 can also enroll in the afternoon drama class called “Take the Stage” for a thematic pairing all about masks. Students in both sessions will have a chance to complete several projects, and to explore their creative vision with music and movement. Taught by artist and local art instructor, Juel Hartmann.

Experience life on a working ranch overlooking Monterey Bay! Children work together on real-life projects at Jade Ranch, located on 75 acres adjacent to Wilder Ranch, north of Santa Cruz. As a team, the children build fences and stalls, learn to use an array of tools, feed animals, and pick produce from summer gardens. Transportation is provided to and from the Gateway campus. Taught by Russell and Erica Berg.

Language Arts Intensive $450

June 23 – July 18 (Weeks 1-4) (No class on Friday, July 4th.)
1st & 2nd Graders: 8:45 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
3rd & 4th Graders: 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Boost your child’s foundational reading and writing skills. This four-week class is taught by Marlene Revay, Educational Specialist trained in the LiPS Program, a multi-sensory approach to reading instruction, and by Joan Saia, Gateway’s Educational Specialist. They will use multi-sensory instructive techniques to teach skills in reading, spelling, and handwriting fluency. To meet individual needs, there will be a 4 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. Registration for this class is open to Gateway students only, from now until May 1; if your child is not enrolled at Gateway and you are interested in this class, please email summer@gatewaysc.org to be added to the waitlist. Open registration for all students will start on May 1, and the waitlist students will be contacted at that time.

Art to Music: $190

July 7-11 (Week 3) 1-4 p.m.
Grades: 1st & 2nd

What is art, what is music, and how are they related? We will hear carefully composed music, follow musical evolution through to jazz and improvisation while we let our paintbrushes dance to music! We will look at both abstract and representational art and then explore these genres ourselves. What color does this song sound like? What tune does that color look like? Have fun, explore paints, and enjoy listening! Taught by artist and local art instructor Isabell Fearnsby.

Knit and Fiber Arts: $190

July 7-11 (Week 3) 9:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Grades: 1st, 2nd & 3rd

Learn to create fiber art projects using a variety of yarns, ribbons, threads, and needles. If your child is ready to tie their shoelaces then they are ready for this class. We will explore knitting with just our fingers and yarn. We’ll make pom pom creatures and embellish projects with embroidery. We’ll learn to felt old sweaters and we’ll also be knitting a hat. Instructor Cathy Brown teaches knitting and crochet at The Swift Stitch yarn store.

Animation/Claymation: $210

July 7-11 (Week 3) 1-4 p.m.
Grades: 3rd & up

Bring your ideas to life on the screen! Students will experiment with digital cartooning and claymation using Macromedia Flash and web cams. We’ll create and produce a claymation movie using stop-motion video, complete with special effects and music. Then students will design their own clay models, operate the web camera, and direct their own video. Taught by Gateway technology teacher, Cindy Zimmerman.

Guitar and Music Appreciation: $190

July 7-11 (Week 3) 9:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Grades: 4th, 5th & 6th

Learn guitar basics and immerse yourself in wonderful music! We will cover beginning techniques as a group, and alternate guitar lessons with fun explorations of music and rhythm, appreciation of different types of music, and integrated arts and crafts activities. Students can either bring their own guitar, or contact the summer staff ahead of time to borrow a guitar. Taught by Linda Koffman.

Knitting and Crocheting: $190

July 7-11 (Week 3) 1-4 p.m.
Grades: 4th and up

Learn to knit and crochet in this fiber art class that focuses on needle work. We will make a simple hat and then move on to knitting or crocheting a fun animal or creature. We will also learn some simple techniques to decorate our projects with felting and embroidery. Instructor Cathy Brown teaches knitting and crochet at The Swift Stitch yarn store.
