Week 4

Language Arts Intensive $450

June 23 – July 18 (Weeks 1-4) (No class on Friday, July 4th.)
1st & 2nd Graders: 8:45 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
3rd & 4th Graders: 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Boost your child’s foundational reading and writing skills. This four-week class is taught by Marlene Revay, Educational Specialist trained in the LiPS Program, a multi-sensory approach to reading instruction, and by Joan Saia, Gateway’s Educational Specialist. They will use multi-sensory instructive techniques to teach skills in reading, spelling, and handwriting fluency. To meet individual needs, there will be a 4 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio. Registration for this class is open to Gateway students only, from now until May 1; if your child is not enrolled at Gateway and you are interested in this class, please email summer@gatewaysc.org to be added to the waitlist. Open registration for all students will start on May 1, and the waitlist students will be contacted at that time.

2D and 3D Art Camp [A, B, C]: $190

Explore and create in two and three dimensions! Students will enjoy a range of art instruction and materials. Projects may include watercolor paints and pencils, wire sculpture, collage, beading, pastels, paper mache, origami, and found object sculpture. Students will explore representational as well as abstract forms. Students will also experience working outdoors directly from nature. Projects and techniques will differ between A, B and C sections, allowing students to take the course multiple times. Taught by artist and local art teacher, Juel Hartmann.

Bicycling: $190

July 14-18 (Week 4) 1-4 p.m.
Grades: 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th

Increase your pedal power! Students will learn simple bike maintenance and safety skills, then use those skills to explore fun and educational destinations. Trips may include West Cliff Drive, Natural Bridges, a bicycle repair shop, and more. Students provide their own bicycle (with working brakes and tail light) and a helmet. Students must be able to ride a bicycle under control. Taught by Gateway teacher and cycling enthusiast, Rachel Sattinger.

Cooking Camp: $210

Let’s get cooking! A professional kitchen is a fun and exciting environment to create gourmet food and learn culinary skills from a chef. Students will be introduced to creative cuisine with age-appropriate recipes that they can bring home to share. Gateway is delighted to partner with the Culinary Center of Santa Cruz for this camp. Transportation is provided to and from the Gateway campus. Taught by experienced instructors from Culinary Center of Santa Cruz.

Clay and Sculpture: $190

July 14-18 (Week 4) 9:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Grades: 3rd, 4th & 5th

Have fun with clay in this hands-on sculpture class. We will explore the properties of clay, see examples of clay work from pre-history to Picasso. We will learn how to shape this medium to create our vision: pinch pots, coil pots, statues and sculpture. Then we’ll bake and paint our pieces, letting our imaginations go in three dimensions! Taught by artist and local art instructor Isabell Fearnsby.

Outdoor Science/Hiking: $190

July 28 – August 1 (Week 6) 9:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Learn science while exploring the natural beauty of our local area! Join Gateway’s dynamic science teacher Sara Folkert on outdoor science expeditions to our local parks and beaches. Students will explore forest and marine ecosystem, while applying scientific method and learning concepts from various disciplines (biology, ecology, hydrology).

Create a Book: $210

Your child can be a published author! Creative writing and art explorations make an exciting combination with a masterpiece goal – each child will finish a hardcover book, published using an online service that allows friends and relatives to order their own copies! Students will create short stories or poetry, and illustrate their work using a range of art techniques (collage, pastels, ink, etc.). Taught by writing instructor Lis Bensley and Gateway art teacher Susan Paull.

Family Farm Camp: $360

July 14-18 (Week 4) 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Grades: 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th SORRY, THIS CLASS IS FULL

Experience life on a real working farm! Mornings will be spent planting, harvesting, caring for chickens, collecting and boxing eggs, or running a farm stand. Afternoons are less structured, with time to explore the creek, look for crayfish, play with the goats, pick berries, and more. Transportation will be provided to the Everett Family Farm in Soquel and back to the Gateway campus. Students should pack a lunch for this all-day camp.

Digital Photography: $210

July 14-18 (Week 4) 1-4 p.m.

July 28 – August 1 (Week 6) 1-4 p.m.
Grades: 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th

See the world through a whole new lens! Students will explore topics such as framing a photo, seeing light, evaluating composition, positive and negative spaces, understanding depth of field, and more. Outdoor shooting sessions and one indoor studio session will be followed by computer lab time, in which students learn to download and manipulate photos in Photoshop. Students should bring their own digital camera (or contact the summer staff ahead of time to rent or borrow a camera). Taught by Tim Folkert.
