Social justice is one of our school’s values. To support our on-going learning, an educator from Teaching Tolerance lead us through a workshop that focused on how we can design lessons around social justice standards: identity, diversity, justice, and action. Teaching Tolerance is a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The workshop was inspiring and meaningful. Our experience on Monday connects to an on-going theme we have in fifth-grade. Early in the year, the children were designated as Agents of Change, and over the course of this year, the class will look within themselves and discover how to make positive changes in their lives and in our world.
Here’s the link to the video that informed the children that they are agents of change: https://youtu.be/Y4bjlcykAfk.
Next week is an intensive week with Krissie in the Discovery Center. During this time, the class will be exploring the first standard, Identity, as they complete a project that demonstrates self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities.
Later in the year, the children will research a social justice issue and determine what actions one can take against prejudice and discriminatory actions. The topic your child takes on should reflect your family’s values, and we encourage you to talk to your child about social justice issues.
Something about social justice and issues may come up in discussions.
Message to parents that they will hear about things from kids. We want to know their concerns about what their kids are taking home.
As we study our nation, conversations around social justice will arise. We intend to guide the children through these discussions so they can establish a developmentally appropriate understanding of the world around them with compassion. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any concerns or if a topic develops at home that you would like to talk about.
Working with the group on writing has been inspirational to say the least. This week we continued to discuss the idea of elevating our writing through dreaming the dream of a story. The idea is that kids put themselves inside the story or memory before they begin to write. In order to develop vocabulary that may help with this process, we discussed and created lists of vivid verbs. For example, there is definitely a difference between walk and strut, or strut and saunter. Next week we will begin our journey through the writer’s process with a personal narrative.
