At the heart of learning at Gateway School lies the heart of the child.

Consider your own child: filled with questions and bursting with curiosity. Absorbing and then proudly displaying his newly acquired knowledge. Practicing difficult skills in pursuit of mastery, and delighting in her ever-expanding capacity. Smiling love to those he loves. Giggling, laughing, joyously playing, and forging life-long connections. Marveling at the diversity of life, an unabashed advocate for fairness and justice, and awe-struck by the profundity of nature.

These qualities of scholarship and citizenship have been nurtured and cultivated at Gateway School since our founding in 1970.  By experiencing vigorous and vibrant academics, an emphasis on individual character and personal development, and the fostering of connections with and between each other and the world around us, graduates of Gateway become genuine scholars with agency over their own lives. They are equipped for success in life – not just high school, college, and career – and go on to make a meaningful impact on the world around them.

Our faculty supports children in their construction of deep understanding, in learning about themselves, and in celebrating the differences between us, by providing a range of rich learning opportunities. On any given day, you may see our students making native California animal masks (2nd), programming quad copters in our Discovery Center (5th), brewing tea in the Life Lab (1st), presenting skits in Spanish class (7th), parsing primary source documents about the Gold Rush (4th), predicting how astronauts will explain how water moves in space (K), debating the difference between the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment (8th), or quietly devouring a book (all!).

From the application of neuroscience to the practice of mindfulness, our faculty fearlessly pursue a greater understanding of how the brain works, and uses it to design developmentally responsive curriculum that cultivates critical thinking, strong academic knowledge, and the equally important skills of resiliency, organization, reflection, and decision-making that are essential to future success.

We thank you for visiting our website. We invite you to explore every page, and then come visit our campus to see how this incredible community honors our mission to inspire children to lead lives of purpose and compassion through scholarship and citizenship.

Here’s to a life of critical inquiry and participatory engagement; here’s to personal transformation; here’s to keeping alive the heart of the child throughout our lives!
