We offer a variety of interscholastic sports for students in grades 5-8, and compete against other teams from public, independent, and Catholic schools throughout Santa Cruz County.  We are proud that our teams contain a range of student athletes. They are fun places for serious athletes who want to compete, and for students who have never played on a team before. The top three emphases of our athletics programs are teamwork, skill-building, and having fun!

Schedules for Practices and Games

Teams meet three to four times per week for practices and games. Practice is expected; it is a time for the team to become a cohesive unit, and is a valuable part of the program. All game schedules are posted on the main school calendar.

Seasons run according to the academic calendar.

Flag-Football (Q1: Sept/Oct)
Cross-Country (Q1: Sept/Oct)
Girls Basketball (Q1: Sept/Oct)
Boys Basketball (Q2: Nov/Dec/Jan)
Girls Volleyball (Q3: Feb/Mar)
Boys Volleyball (Q4: Apr/May/June)

It is the responsibility of all players and parents to ensure that there is a full commitment to the team during the entire season. As representatives of the school, student-athletes also must meet academic and behavior expectations to participate. Download the Parent-Student Sports Agreement here.

Basketball and Volleyball: The Circle Church Gym (111 Errett Cir, Santa Cruz, CA 95060)
Flag-Football: DeLaveaga Park (850 Branciforte Dr, Santa Cruz, CA 95065)
Cross Country: Practices held during elective period.

Practice times and game schedules are dependent on availability of the facilities, but typically practices are held after-school Mondays and Wednesdays, with games falling on various days of the week.

Sports League

Gateway participates in the Santa Cruz County Private Schools Association (SCCPSA). The league consists of fourteen private schools stretching from Santa Cruz to Watsonville. Games are played both at home and away.

Team Structure

Basketball, Volleyball, and Coed Flag-Football typically have two teams depending on sign-ups; those teams are delineated by grade (5/6 and 7/8). The coaching staff does retain the option to place players in the best position to grow, improve, and play as much as possible. Coed Cross Country is available to 6th-8th graders and participates as a single team.

Gateway strives to accommodate all interested students, and there are never cuts.

Coaches and Parent Volunteers

We pursue qualified coaches for each sport and encourage parents to volunteer as head and assistant coaches. We also greatly appreciate our parents that assist with transportation, team gatherings, and occasionally taking stats/running scoreboard.
