Week 5

Dear Families,

The fifth grade had a productive week with Krissie in the Discovery Center as they created an Agent of Change poster indicating their Agent name and a personal motto using Adobe Illustrator.

Next Wednesday, we will have an elementary engineering activity in order to help us start thinking like inventors, and we need a few adults to assist us – the teachers, not the children. If you are interested and available on Wednesday, October 2nd, from 9:30 to 10:30-ish, please email kurt.almendras@gatewaysc.org by Monday, September 30th.

This year our class will be participating in a special kind of science fair called the Invention Convention. It is designed to promote your child’s problem-solving and creative-thinking skills. Children will be following a step-by-step process to invent a new product or develop a new method for solving a problem that they have identified in their life, or your family or the community. For more information, you can follow this link, https://cainventionconvention.org/parents/. We will also be sending home information over the next several weeks to let you know what we are doing in class and how you can support your child at home. This is as new for us as it is for your children, and we are very excited to learn new things.

A couple of weeks ago, we introduced the fifth graders to Google Classroom, and over the past week, they have completed assignments through this digital learning space. We will be using our Google Classrooms throughout the year, and you can expect your child to have assignments they will need to complete via their Google Classrooms. We are very aware of the necessity to have limited screen time each day, and if you have any questions or concerns, please send them our way.

Your child has a responsible use policy document in their binder. Please review it over the weekend and send it back to school with your child on Monday if you agree. As part of our Native American Studies unit, the children will be emailing various Native American organizations and tribes, and we need to know that we have your permission for your child to have an @gatewaysc.org email account.

As a reminder, Wednesday October 2nd is a half day; dismissal is at noon.  All students who are not picked up at the curb are taken to ASC (free of charge) until 2:30. At 2:30 students will be signed in for the normal aftercare rate.

All the best,

Kurt
